They made their way to the exit, and Emma felt the cool night air on her face. It was time to face the music."You hurt me, Derek. You just left without even saying goodbye. Do you have any idea how that felt?" Emma's voice was shaking, and she couldn't help the tears that welled up in her eyes.Derek looked at her, then looked away."Emma, I'm sorry. I didn't think it would be this hard, but everything's so messed up now. I didn't want to hurt you."Emma laughed bitterly."But you did. And you know what? I'm done pretending it's okay. I'm done hiding my feelings for you. If you can't or won't be with me, just tell me. I deserve to know."Derek looked at her, really looked at her, and Emma could see the pain in his eyes."Emma, I can't be with you. Not right now, anyway. I have some things I need to work out first."Emma nodded, the tears still coming. But for the first time in a long time, she felt free. She wasn't hiding anymore, wasn't pretending. She had faced the music, and she knew that no matter what happened, she could handle it.And with that, Emma turned and walked away, back to the chaotic world of the club and the thumping music. But this time, she knew she was different. She was single-minded, focused on her own happiness and not willing to compromise it for anyone.
